When we got back from the garage sales...

May 22, 2005 By Glenn Turner

...look what was waiting for me!

Difficult Questions About Video Games

Wow that was quick. I ordered it late on the 14th and it arrived roughly a week later. This (not so) little book made it halfway across the world in that time!

If you haven't heard about 'Difficult Questions About Videogames', well you can read all the nitty gritty about it over at Public Beta, but essentially it's a compilation of musings by game developers, writers, theorists, etc. in response to a series of questions about video games. It's currently a free book (free + shipping and handling which will run the standard US citizen around $15) and that price was enough to sway me to order it (kudos to Mr. LeFeuvre to calling my attention to this development)! That plus a fine list of contributors such as Warren Spector, Jeff Minter, Aleks Krotoski and someone I never expected to see in this book, Johnny Violent.

I haven't had much of a chance to go through much of the book except for the slightly windy introduction but, so far I'm not disappointed. It is what it is, and those interested in mulling over the nature of video games (or 'videogames') in a theoretical, or simply abstract manner probably won't be disappointed. I'm sure I'll weigh in with some sort of article about it in the near future though.

Okay, time to play some of the new (to me) games we found today! Finally!
