Chi-Style Drunksaling Season Three - Week 1: They're Grrrreeeaaat!

May 18, 2004 By Glenn Turner

Unitdaisy and I were so inspired by the (now defunct) drunkgamers.com's garagesaling adventures that we went out about Chicago, scrounging for games. Often we returned home empty handed to post our experiences in the Drunkgamers Forum.

For those unfamiliar with the term drunksaling it's simple: you wake up hungover, far too early on a Saturday morning, have a swig of the dog that bit you,and go out to garage sales looking for something video game related - all while wishing you were still in bed. This weeks antics took place on May 15th, 2004.

It's hard to believe that this is now the third year we've went drunksaling. Unfortunately Unitdaisy was absent this week, but our friend Dave tagged along in her place! Sadly, we both were late, and I just plain overslept. Woe that Unitdaisy was missing to shove my lazy ass out of bed! This week's plan of attack was simple - over at Roscoe Village there was a smattering of roughly 30 garage sales that we would investigate.

Our first sale of the morning afternoon. Dave slowly creeped up to the sale as to not startle the denizens.

For those times when you want a romantic on-the-go meal of Frosted Flakes.

Yet another 'in-house' sale. It's like someone tried to play 'Pretend Gap'!

How much is that old man in the mirror? The one with the sun flaring off his scalp?

An abundance of reel-to-reel magnetic tape, for all your 70s audio needs.

Around this time, we took a break from the sales and dodged inside a thrift store. Luckily, they had a bit of booty worthy of scoping!

Oh Excitebike. If I didn't have Animal Crossing, and your twin brother at home...

What's this? A crate of Genesis games? Oh. Sports games. Is that DVD what I think it is??

Haha very funny.

Not pictured is a SNES and NES all bundled up for someone to take home and love, and a mystery Sega CD game that we forgot we saw until about an hour after leaving the store. Drat.

Cheap sweets for my fingers!

Poor orphaned NES.

Back out in the daylight...

I once spent two hours punching cardboard designs out to play Bionicle for ten minutes. Thanks for the memories.

This is what you call a TriShock door.

Lighting fixtures of the future ... today! And in your backyard!

His & her woodwinds!

And with the raspy gasp of those cases, our spirits had been defeated. Well, that and it was approaching 2pm and the sellers were growing impatient with our hemming, hawing and photographic flashing. Dave then left me for dead while I limped over to another thrift store on our old route.

It is what it is. Oh, and look -- Wolfenstein 3D for Mac - OS 7 required!

Well, it could be worse...

...okay, it is worse.

Zork ...with graphics? This I have to see.

I don't know about you, but the last Test Drive I played was in CGA.

Hey, I know these guys! I worked on a video of theirs, and was paid with a shiny CD. Mental note: CDs do not make good currency.

Is that Rip Torn?

So ends this year's first outing, and while it was slightly lackluster it most certainly was no utter failure. Any week that we capture both games and consoles with my trusty camera is a good one.

Find of the Week: Zork: Grand Inquisitor. I haven't played it, but it's Zork. It can't be all bad, can it?

Lesson of the Week: Most community-wide multi-garage sales have a map to each sale in the neighborhood. Make sure to get a map at the first sale and coordinate a quick & easy path before moving along to the next, otherwise you'll waste too much time trying to figure out just which direction you should go for the next.
