Miission Accomplished

We finally tracked down a Wii! Earlier this week I called up our local Target, the same one we queued up at for the initial Wii launch, to see if/when they were receiving more Wiis. I was told that they had 'accidentally' sold off most of the Wii units reserved for a Sunday sale and that they only had "less than five" left. However, they did let me know that I should check out the Target in Evanston (a Chicago suburb) on Sunday, and to 'make sure to arrive early'. Allegedly they'd have around 50 available, so we were feeling pretty good about our chances.

We woke up at the bleary hour of 6am and damned the absolutely frigid weather, swearing that we didn't need a Wii if it actually meant having to stand outside for an hour. Luckily, when we arrived at Target around quarter of seven, the employees had taken pity on the twelve patience souls (one poor guy had arrived there at 3am) and let us stand in the enclosed, heated entrance. Around 7am the security guard came out and told us that there were only 19 units available and handed out tickets, leaving the most recent prospective Wii patron ticket-less. I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for him, since we were in that position two weeks ago.

The next hour featured a constant stream of people being turned away, all told that the available Wiis were spoken for and that they might want to try Toys 'R Us (who were supposed to get in a decent number of units) or Circuit City (who had 9 to sell). Otherwise, the rest of the experience was amiable and quiet - mostly uneventful. Unitdaisy did notice a dearth of young ladies in the line though, as opposed to the launch line we attended which felt almost like a Chicago couples mixer. Most of the folks in line this time around were men in their 20s or older mothers. The only sour point was that they had only a handful of addition Wii-motes (and absolutely no extra 'nunchuks'), the last of which was nabbed up by #12. Oh well, it gives us something to hunt for now that we have our Wii.

Since yesterday, our time with our Wii been split pretty evenly between playing with the Mii tool, Zelda and Wii Sports. Wii Sports is just as everyone's been describing it: fantastic tennis, fun bowling, lackluster everything else. I was really skeptical about the golf section being mediocre, but after playing a handful of holes I found myself growing more and more frustrated with the power meter and small number of club options.

Zelda, well, I really like the controls, especially shaking the nunchuk to execute a spin attack. It's just that I'm just not quite sold on the twilight visual design yet. Don't get me wrong, it looks fantastic, but I'm not convinced that it's a good visual match for the game. But I am only a few hours into it and have many left to go, I'm sure.

Nevertheless, I'm more than happy with the system and damn glad I lined up for one. The Wii-mote works better than I imagined it would, the Wii's menu system has clearly been labored over and refined - just everything about the Wii is simple, fun and just works. Plus it has the rare distinction of being the only console in our house whose controller, when not in use, sits on our coffee table instead of being docked with its machine. Slick.

Congrats on finally finding one. Ive been awfully tempted to go on th Wii hunt despite my impending finacial doom. xmas, losing my job next year, finding a new one, moving, and probably starting college at the ripe old age of 25. mmm new zelda it tempts me so. i had zelda music stuck in my head all day friday at work after watching a six part g4 featurette about the previous games in the series.

I saw that series also. The Timeline segment boggled my mind, but now I can't think of it any other way.

Btw, Turner, post some pictures of your Mii !

Grats on scoring your Wii, Mr Turner.
As for me, I get to stare at the Zelda demo all day at work. :(
After christmas I might have some extra cash to pick on up.

Nicely done, Mr. T.

Please continue to share your thoughts as you progress through Zelda, won't you? I'm not normally a fan of Zelda games, but Twilight Princess has me intrigued. Especially the awesome-looking fishing. (I'm a sucker for fishing games, and am currently making do with Animal Crossing: Wild World whilst I hunt for a decent quality SEGA Bass Fishing controller for my Dreamcast.)

Sadly, I've just forked for a new car so I won't be in a position to buy a Wii here in the UK when they're released this Friday (8th Dec). I ordered Portrait of Ruin (out today in the US) this morning to make up for it though, so I'm still going to have a most excellent gaming Christmas I'm sure.

I was going to post my Mii in your thread using that Flash Mii tool, but they don't have the same hair choice that I used. :(

I admit that I haven't spent much time with the fishing - I've only caught two fish, but it was pretty fun. The Wii-mote is perfect for fishing, so I imagine that someone, someday will make a good Wii fishing game. I'm not sure whether TP is worth buying just for that though.

I'm a bit torn with the game, as it really doesn't take as much advantage of the Wii-mote as it could. There are a few parts I've come across where they stick to standard button controls, and I can't help but wonder why they didn't utilize more motion sensing (I won't say exactly which, but one has to do with Epona).

Also, it's funny but TP really, really reminds me of Okami, as they share a lot more than just similar game mechanics (and some of the more obvious comparisons). It's sheer coincidence and all but, if you've played Okami and you've played TP, you'll know exactly what I mean. It's just kind of funny considering how much (somewhat deserved) flak Okami received from some for feeling like a Zelda game when new elements in the later released Zelda game end up feeling like Okami.

To all of you who can't or are unable to get a Wii, my condolences - I hope you're able to pick one up soon though! Really, Wii Sports Tennis is just about worth the price of admission alone.

Well, the wife went to Sam's yesterday morning. She called me from the lot, wondering why there was no line. Turns out there were no wiis. Now she wants to chase a rumor of some at walmart. I hope to disuade her. Jumping through hoops is stupid. She's smarter than that. It's the kids driving her. There are some things I will not do for my kids. Acting like a stupid sheep is one of them.

#9 jt-3d Dec 6, 2006 05:47am

I failed to disuade her. She's out at wally world now. Only 2.25hrs to go. GG, gerl. Well i stated me opinion. She ignored it as usual. eh
