Metal Gear Madness

March 28, 2006 By Glenn Turner

As some of you may know, I was greatly anticipating Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, not because of the new camera (so far, I actually find it a bit disorienting) or the online gameplay (I have yet to play a match but, thanks to Mr. LeFeuvre, I could if I wanted to!) but because of the third disc, available only in the limited edition of the game. This third disc, Existence, compiles all of the cut-scenes from the game and weaves a film from of the scripted content. It sounded like a bold experiment and I was terribly interested to see how it would play out.

I placed my pre-order for the limited edition about two or three weeks prior to the game's release at my local Gamestop, even calling ahead to make sure that they were still taking pre-orders, since a number of big online sites had ceased taking pre-orders. However, when I arrived and plunked down my $5 advance, they couldn't find the limited edition in the computer system. Nonetheless, I was assured that there would be a copy waiting for me upon release.

Of course that's when I turned to Unitdaisy and told her 'I know I'm gonna get screwed by this.'

March 15th rolls around and we hit up Gamestop before heading out for a nice evening of live entertainment. Surprisingly, she recognizes one of the clerks behind the counter and we start chatting while waiting for his boss fill the pre-order. Unitdaisy mentions that we're going to watch the Subsistence movie this weekend, and he nods and tells us he just nabbed his copy of the Limited Edition. His boss finishes with the prior customers and gives us the whole 'WelcometoGamestop whereyoucanpre-orderKingdomHearts2andanXbox360backinstockinApril HowmayIhelpyou?' spiel. 'One copy of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Limited Edition!' I say, pre-order receipt in-hand. He hesistates slightly before murmuring 'See, there's a bit of a problem...'

I was informed that there was an SKU-snafu that occured where the two editions were offered as one or something. I honestly wasn't paying that much attention to the specific details of the error, as his words were muffled by the sound of eBay auction prices ratcheting out of control in my head. They had received three copies of the limited edition, two went to pre-orders placed well over a month ago and the third ... well, our acquaintance, the clerk, had nabbed it as he had apparently fallen prey to the same SKU mix-up. I can't say that I blame him; if I were in his shoes I would have kept it for myself too.

Through this situation the boss was very accommodating. He even called a few other stores and was very apologetic about the ordeal, but I knew it was hopeless. I begrudgingly purchased the normal edition and we were about to leave when the clerk offered to let us borrow the third disc. Now, to clarify, we really don't know him and he really doesn't know us, which is why he asked for a bit of collateral before handing it over to us, but the sentiment was still very much appreciated. We did take him up on the offer and left the store feeling very thankful that he was so kind and trusting to let two strangers take this valuable disc of his (the Limited Edition is now commanding ~$100 on eBay) so that they may enjoy it.

Of course we did watch and return it to him in the condition lent to us (well, minus the packing wrap). But moments of kindness like that are few and far between in a big city like Chicago, and it's nice to know that sometimes gamers are willing to help out other gamers, even if they're strangers. And thanks to his efforts, I'll soon be able to post my thoughts on Kojima's conceptual 'Watch MGS3' experiment!

My thanks go out to him one last time, although I think he's probably sick of hearing it by now!

yeah, when i went to buy my copy (sans pre-order) i asked about the Limited Edition version, the ever-so-helpful GameStop clerk informed me that their store hadn't even seen ONE! only a tad disapointed (the main selling point for me was the orignal MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2) i purchased the normal copy, and am about to face off against The End. he will be my bitch when i get home from school tonight. (as, when i owned the original version of MGS 3: SE i did not beat him, and ended up selling off my copy to attend a concert, but now i couldn't tell you which one).

i really want to see that FMV movie though...is it cool? would it be worth the trouble to track down?

Hopefully it's just as good as Shenmue: The Movie!

Yeah, that battle definitely requires patience, that's for sure.

Depends on how much you end up spending to track it down. For the extra $10 that it was supposed to retail for, sure, that's a no-brainer. But for $100, $120?? No way. There's really not much in the way of new material in it, and what has been added actually serves to confuse more than clarify.

I know there's some MGS fan out there that went to the trouble of stitching together the cut-scenes from Twin Snakes, MGS2 and MGS3 - you might want to see if you can't hunt those down instead.

so there IS new material? I was under the impression that it was made solely of existing cutscenes. Could you give a run-down of the noticable additions?

What's your opinion regarding someone leaking the video on the internet? Would it be cheating the people that made the game? Or is it their own fault for not making enough copies of the LE available?

I'l go into more detail in the upcoming article but, most of the newly generated material was in the form of voice-overs to condense time and information. There are some scenes constructed from gameplay scenes instead of a proper cut-scene proper, and those changes are pretty noticable as the character animation becomes much less fluid and the 'cinematography' changes drastically.

Just because something is difficult to get ahold of doesn't mean that you're entitled to steal it.

By any chance, did they fix the lip syncing?

That was one thing that annoyed me about MGS3.

I was wondering if it was a grey area, like ROMs and owning the original game. And has there been any word on the fact of the 'movie' coming out in any format(Stand alone DVD/Web release/etc)?

Nope, as far as I've been able to notice, the lip sync is still the same as in the original. It's noticable at times and a bit irritating but not a dealbreaker in my book.

I haven't heard anything on this front. Based on what I've read, Kojima seems to believe the film is 'part' of the game experience so I doubt it'll get released independently of the game.

hey there, G. Turner and friends. the person writing this is the kind-hearted clerk from gamestop on clark street (chicago) that you mentioned in the posting. let me say:

you're very welcome.

i've decided to become a member of these boards - why not? also, my screen name - BuLLeT.t|mE - is the name i made famous playing CounterStrike at some server called clangrounds.com. i was also a member of the clangrounds forums.

anyway - to get to the subject of this metal gear video: i watched it, and honestly, i don't really know if i liked it. i'll let G. Turner fill you in the on the details, but seriously - all i saw was the same cutscenes from the game with very little re-imagining going on. the parts in between the scenes, to explain how snake got from tselinoyarsk to granyj grad and elsewhere, etc etc, simply show moments of expert gameplay with voiceovers taken from radio conversations.

also... you guys might hate me for it - and i know full well it's not a great way to make a first impression, but... seeing as how i did not like the theatre disc all that much (and must assure you all that you're not missing out on much, IMO), i put the sucker up on ebay, and am hoping to make a bill for it. also, cuz i work at gamestop, i threw on a bunch of promo crap that i snagged for free: the saga dvd i got for my reservation (sealed), and a metal gear ac!d 2 animation cell i stole, heheh.

so as things go: nice to meet and be met by you guys.

Indeed - it definitely didn't do much in the wow-department.

Nah, you already did a kind deed with the game , that's negates any auctioning that occured after the fact.

I haven't forgotten about the write-up - it looks like it'll be going up some time tomorrow. But hey, thanks for coming on by and posting! I hope ya stick around and check the rest of the forum out!
