Slighted Games

November 28, 2005 By Glenn Turner

I cannot tell you how long I've waited to actually start up this feature. Unitdaisy and myself actually brainstormed it back when we conceptualized The New Gamer and every few months I'd ponder actually starting it up before moving along to an article about the latest current release to grace my desk. Sure, it's not a terribly original concept per se, but I do feel it's important to occasionally reflect on the games that were unduly ignored. Hopefully y'all will enjoy the article, even if it's a day late (probably two days for most of you). The holiday weekend ensured that I would have not a free moment for myself.

There was one point I was unable to wedge into the article, even though I feel it's an important point. It's important because it relates to the excellent game Psychonauts, and that important point is such:

Space Channel 5 has a section that's shrouded in black-light (for fans of the game you'll find it in Level Four, right before you meet up with Evila). It's not as nice as the black velvet look of Edgar Teglee's level in Psychonauts (see? Important!), but it certainly does evoke a black-light look. I never really noticed it until Thursday's play-through, which is odd as I've played through the game numerous times. It's not prominent but it certainly is a nice little effect.

That's it. A pretty fine point I'd say, but I realize some may not appreciate the effort it takes to pin down that sort of aesthetic in a game. Oh well, their loss.
