Site fall down, go boom, cough up a grand..

October 9, 2005 By Glenn Turner

As you may have noticed, The New Gamer has been ..wobbly the last few days. For the bulk of Oct. 5th it was simply inaccessible. So what happened?

Well, around noon that day I noticed that the server was unresponsive so I opened up a support ticket with my host. Then about an hour later after hearing nothing from them I realized there was an open ticket that I hadn't actually written concerning abuse.

I immediately called up AIT to find out what was going on only to find out that the server I had been using for TNG had been compromised and that the attacker had been utilizing it for nefarious activities. AIT had received a complaint, they investigated it and before contacting me, pulled the plug on the server and immediately fined me a $1000 for breaking their 'Acceptable Use Policy'.

That's the short of it. We're now up and running elsewhere, obviously. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to get data from the server after they shut it down, so that means the forum database is out of date by about a month, but otherwise we've pretty much been able to recover everything one way or another.

I'm currently finishing up restoring the final bits of TNG, such as some of the non-imperative scripts that run our gallery functions and the like. By the time you read this everything will probably be running a'ok, or mostly all right, and the 5th will seem like a bad dream to me. There may be a TNG fund raising drive in the near future to recoup some of the losses, perhaps including some auctioning off of drunksaling goods, but I haven't quite sussed that out yet. What's probably more lamentable is missing our standard weekly update. Hopefully you all understand and will look beyond that though.

So that's that. How have you been?

Just by the amount of work you've done over this weekend, you've done real good in bringing it back up.

Way to not let it stop ya.
