To play, or not to play - you tell me.

May 10, 2005 By Glenn Turner

Out of what can only be called a severe case of masochism, I Gamefly'ed Scrapland some time ago, and until recently it just collected dust while I played Psychonauts and toiled away on work. So on Friday, I was too exhausted to do any actual work and popped it in for a bit of a respite after helping a friend move.

Boy howdy, the lead character is creepy looking.

Aaaaaaaaahhhh!

What's worse is that he's named D. Tritus. Get it? It's because he's a robot made of scrap! Oh, and a planet named Chimera! It's a script worthy of Piers Anthony, that's for sure.

Besides the groan-inducing writing, the game (well at least the first half hour I could bear to try out), is insufferably dull, walking from point A to see tutorial B without any explanation. Heck, if my character just ends up with amnesia, I'd at least like some sort of indication of it. But otherwise, it feels like "D. Tritus" is just a blank slate, a character with no meaning and no bearing. Sure, there's probably a good twenty hours in front of me to build on it but ... so far there's no indication that I should be following these yellow goal objective arrows other than the fact that the screen tells me to. Combine this with the flacid, depth-less gameplay which at the moment, consists of running around and occasionally flying around in a (somewhat impressive) outside environment and...

...I don't want to continue playing this game. I really don't. And I won't, unless you guys advise me otherwise. I realize that this game may have some untapped potential deep inside of it, but at the moment, I'm having a hard time mustering up even the apathy to not care about it.

So tell me, should it stay or should it go? The final decision will be made Thursday. I can only hope it's in my best interest, whatever the judgement may be. Of course, if I'm told to slog through it there will be a follow-up. So if you punish me, you'll be punished in kind.

I'd recommend you keep playing. Then again, I'm a sadist.

Hah, a fine post!

Not fine enough to make me play the rest of the damned thing though. It's gonna take a little more than that! Looks like it's headed back in the 3pm mail pick-up.

Then McGee has already won.
