Thar She Bowls

January 31, 2005 By Glenn Turner

Thanks to my internet provider Comcast, we (as in, myself and unitdaisy) were stuck offline all weekend. Yeah, real bang-up job they're doing - we've been stuck with no internet for a quarter of the frickin' month of January. Normally this would be a good thing, as I typically take advantages of these extreme outages to get in a bit of gaming but alas, that didn't happen this weekend, at least no more than usual. However, I did spend a smattering of time earlier last week (during, yes, another outage) with Under the Skin.

Readers of our forum know that I have been anticipating it for quite some time, and to say that I'm disappointed in the end result would be an understatement along the lines of say, 'My internet connection is only slightly unreliable.' The concept and design is wacky (you're an alien sent to Earth to prove your mettle by pranking us puny humans), and visually the game is somewhat striking - feeling like the game design was inspired by bobblehead dolls. The problem comes in that the game becomes amazingly redundant within three minutes of playing, and when your first level has a ten minute time limit ... well, that's just bad news. The shoddy camera doesn't help either; while it's user-adjustable, it always seems to be too close-up, and too low to be adequate. Capcom, you can do better than this. And where's that Power Stone follow-up??

As I've mentioned before, I'm burning through the LucasArts Archives: Adventure Collection at the moment. However, what you probably don't know is that unitdaisy and my bowling league just started up again! It's been a while since we've been able to participate, but I finally retrieved our league shirt from its mothballs. Enjoy the following pictures as a sad commentary on the nature of my being.

Guybrush. As in Threepwood. He'll rock your frame and bake your turkeys.

Not fair - you have a better shirt AND chair than me.

Well, I have carpet, so there!

Sweet shirt - how much you want for it.

Bowling leagues are neat things. A friend of mine used to be on a team called incredi-bowl. After playing badly the team's name was changed to horri-bowl and procceded to place 2nd.

Dude...your geek cred just shot up exponentially.

I didn't think such a thing was possible...

I miss Thar She Bowls. I was on the team and can't find my shirt in the midst of moving way to many times. I think someone stole it. It was a great shirt and the pwers that be wouldn't let me keep it. Bastards
