Multitap #3: More offtopic than ever before!

The good news is that Best Buy is selling the new Gamecube demo disc separately, against Nintendo's wishes. However, would you pay $39.95 for it? And why wouldn't Nintendo offer it for sale in the first place?

unitdaisy: $40 is an absolute rip-off for a demo disc. If they're supposed to be selling them with the GC's and they're selling them separately, what are they going to do about the people buying the GC's who expect the disc to come with it?

peccaui: I suspect that when they run out of discs, they'll discontinue the offer - essentially screwing them over too. But will you believe me when I tell you that they initially offered it for $10, and just recently hiked the price up 400%?

unitdaisy: Yes.

peccaui: Don't you find that appalling?

unitdaisy: I already said I did.

peccaui: But even moreso now!! I mean, $10 in and of itself is too much to pay for a demo disc - but not outrageous. We could finally buy Super Monkey Ball 2 and still have change left over for that amount. Or buy Ikaruga like I did instead.

unitdaisy: I'm not disagreeing. Next question.

peccaui: So ... angry ...

It was recently announced that Fable will contain a co-op mode. What other upcoming games do you think will be enhanced by a co-op mode (either announced or just well-wishing)?

peccaui: Jet Set Radio for the GGBA! Can't you imagine the link-up fun??

unitdaisy: No. I think that JSR is too fast-paced of a game to keep two people on the same screen at the same time.

peccaui: But they don't have to be on the same screen at the time - that's the beauty of GBA two-player mode ... You could have two people that have sectioned up the city, marking it up, that kind of thing ...

unitdaisy: What's the point? You're in one section, your friend is in another, basically you are playing two seperate games - how much fun is that?

peccaui: My mom said it was a cool idea.

unitdaisy: Return of the King. Two Towers was fun, but it would have been better if you could have a second player with you - and you could actually work together.

peccaui: Bringing the series to feel even more like Golden Axe. I'm all for this.

unitdaisy: It's all about the Fellowship!

peccaui: BWAHAHAHAHAHA - geek.

With the recent announcements from Sony concerning the PSX (and to a lesser extent, the PSP) and absolutely no word on the PS3 (except that the cell technology has been left out,) does it feel like Sony might be grasping for straws?

unitdaisy: I don't think so - the PSX doesn't seem like grasping for straws.

peccaui: Well, considering that it's been publically stated that the Cell processor will not be used in the PS3 - I think it's entirely possible that Sony started off with this technology and now are trying to find ways to stay current in the console wars while regrouping their PS3 plans.

unitdaisy: I don't think they just threw the PSX together - they probably already had a multi-purpose unit in mind. It really appeals to the more casual gamer, which is the market that they should start tapping as video games become more mainstream. Now you can have a video game machine that when you aren't using it is actually useful for something other than gathering dust.

peccaui: Don't forget that Sony was initially talking about implementing Tivo-ish abilities with the PS2 in tandem with the PS2 modem and hard drive. Minus those abilities, what else does the PSX do? Burn DVDs? Wow. And I already play DVDs on my PS2. I think it will appeal to gadget freaks, but I don't think this is a step forward for the Playstation line and actually think that Sony would be better releasing this unit and ditching the Playstation affiliation.

unitdaisy: I disagree - think about how many printer/scanner/photocopier bundles are sold because regular people don't want to buy three different devices. This is the same thing - they can have a DVD player, a Tivo player and a Playstation for half the price of purchasing them separately.

peccaui: That's true, but I think too many casual users will look at it and say they don't need the games, and will proceed to buy a Tivo and a cheap DVD player.

unitdaisy: I disagree (again) - also if these sell well, it will be a good indication that the PS3 in development should be a multifunctional unit.

peccaui: To quote Seamus Blackley: "Convergence is crap."

unitdaisy: *shrug* Time will prove one of us right... me!

peccaui: Mmmhm. And then you can store your PSX next to your Divx player.
