I'm a big fan of video games. I'm also a huge music fan, especially of the electronic variety. Merging the two is one of life's more delicious inventions, like peanut butter & jelly or computers and a musty basement. Unfortunately, it appears that all too many people have not been exposed to this niche genre of music so in order to illuminate and thwart our current update policy, every Tuesday I'll take a short look at one of many fine video game remixes.
This week we take a look at the lighter side of gaming remixes - those try to capture a more whimsical time & tune.
By now we should all be familiar with the MGS themes. Here, Strike911, purveyor of other fine MGS remixes ramps up the sugar and speed to the traditional theme, resulting in a fantastically boppy remix that twists the majestic drama of the original into a whimical techno interlude he dubs an 'eurobeat mix'. Its saccharine sweetness is only matched by its familiarity and propensity to force your foot to tap with the bubblegum beat. Oh, and definitely don't miss the and additional attentions to detai, such as codec counterpoint.
Children of the 80s, prepare for nostalgia! This remix revels in the basic Masters of the Universe theme, but adds such essential elements as a four-on-the-floor beat and your candy-driven synths. Nothing about this mix will leave your mouth frowning, relying on simplistic devices all throughout and never wearing out its welcome. And really, the remix name Fun Dance Mix does a good job of summarizing itself. (ed. note - originally found via Remix.kwed.org which seems to be experiencing some problems at the moment.)
Perhaps one of the first 'Overclocked' remixes I ever heard, and definitely one of the more notable in my fragile little mind, as at the time a co-worker of mine was knees-deep in Dig Dug MAME goodness. The driving, eerily sharp theme drives the song and Injury's nuances and refinement abound. Nothing says cute and infectious as much as this rearrangement.
